Training & Consultation

Safe and Together Model Advocacy Institute

For years, David Mandel & Associates has been working in partnership with domestic violence advocates all over the country to improve the safety and well being of domestic violence survivors and their children.  Skilled and passionate domestic violence advocates are critical for moving  a child welfare system from domestic violence destructive to domestic violence proficient.  Our collaboration with advocates over the years have included a multiyear project to train and support domestic violence advocates to become child welfare domestic violence consultants; participation of local domestic violence advocates in our intensive Safe and Together training of child welfare workers; and training in the Safe and Together model for co-located advocates in numerous states.

We believe that domestic violence advocates can play a  critical and unique role in creating domestic violence informed child welfare systems, and that child welfare systems are becoming more and more open to collaboration and partnership with domestic violence agencies.  We have also seen the role that the Safe and Together model can play in enhancing the work of advocates working with child welfare involved clients and also in improving cross system collaboration between domestic violence agencies and child welfare. Based on our beliefs and experiences, we wanted to create an opportunity to further help domestic violence advocates increase their ability to:

  • improve their individual advocacy with child welfare involved clients
  • improve cross system collaboration through Safe and Together training for their agency peers and local child welfare agency staff and
  • improve their ability to provide case consultation to child welfare

To accomplish this, we developed the Safe and Together Model Advocacy Institute.

What is the Safe and Together™ Model Advocacy Institute?

The Advocacy Institute is an innovative learning opportunity for domestic violence advocates working with child welfare or child welfare involved clients.  This six-month program combines face-to-face training with online learning and individual and group phone coaching sessions to help domestic violence advocates apply the Safe and Together™ model increase their effectiveness.

The Safe and Together Model Advocacy Institute is designed specifically to help domestic violence advocates increase their effectiveness working with child welfare and/or child welfare involved clients.  The Institute mixes theory and practice, expecting the participants to develop and implement a specific outreach, advocacy and training plan. The participants will have the opportunity to receive regular feedback and support for their plan through group and individual coaching sessions, online discussions and emails with the instructors.  Homework including readings, review of videos and other activities continue the learning between face-to-face sessions.  In the final training session, participants will share information from their sites; lead presentations, role plays and other activities; and receive final feedback from David Mandel & Associates staff.
